Steinhaus Cilento by Interhome | Apartment in Rofrano
2 Bedroom Apartment in San Mauro Cilento, Rofrano
type of building: Detached house. year of construction: 1800.
A house located in an old building in the heart of the historical centre of San Mauro Cilento. Restored by the skilful hands of local 'masters', the house has retained all the typical Cilento architectural features: 'faccia vista' stone and 'original' wooden beams.
Centrally located, just a few steps from Piazza Serra and the "San Sebastiano" route of the "Sentieri del Montestella", only fifteen minutes by car from the beach of Mezzatorre di San Mauro Cilento/Acciaroli.
The house, made of original stone and wooden beams dating back to 1800, is on two levels: on the ground floor there is a living room with a large window, sofa, armchair and TV; the living room communicates (open space) with the kitchen equipped with oven, induction hob, fridge/freezer, extractor hood, wooden table with six chairs and a large window; from the same kitchen there is access to the utility room and the bathroom with shower, toilet and small window for ventilation. From the living room, a wide and convenient staircase leads to the first floor where the bedrooms are located, both with windows: one with a double bed and one with three single beds. On the same floor there is also a bathroom with shower, toilet and large window overlooking the courtyard.
Characteristic village of San Mauro Cilento in the centre of the Ancient Cilento National Park: nature and history vibrate in unison!
Hill, Sea, Mountain: three holidays in one!
San Mauro Cilento is a "treasure chest" of history, customs, and structures that bear the flavour of a cultural-rural warp and ancient lifestyles on which agriculture has always been based and on which today's tourism is welded.
Our Marina, called Mezzatorre, with its wide beach and tourist accommodation, originates from two ancient early-medieval settlements: Maritima and San Primo.
On the hill of Sala stands a rural chapel, already a settlement in the 12th century.
Opposite is the valley of the Camarano river and Quarrata, our oldest village, dating back to the 8th century.
On the hillside are olive groves planted by the Greeks, enlivened by the Benedictines and today made into a driving force for development by the members of the 'Nuovo Cilento' Agricultural Cooperative ... and then the fig orchards and vineyards.
The two largest inhabited areas run along the main axis of the ridge in a north-east/south-west direction: houses, vegetable gardens, stone walls, terracotta roofs, here and there a tower or a bell tower, buildings with a courtyard, a well, an oven, a cellar and an oil mill.
At Casal Sottano, in the Aria dei Santi district, stands the palace with adjoining chapel, home of the last heir to the throne of Constantinople, Rogerio Paleologo, nephew of Emperor Constantine XI. One of its rooms on the ground floor houses the living museum of our ancient carnival, 'A Maschkarata.
When the city fell in 1453, many Greek dignitaries joined the prince and founded a community here around the chapels of St Sophia and the Holy Spirit.
The parish church, dedicated to St. Maurus the Martyr, is a place of faith, art and history, not least because of the presence of the 'Eleousa' museum in the successor to the Pio Monte.
Further upstream, within the cemetery structure, the 16th century chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows is the destination of votive-penitential pilgrimages.
The chapel of the Carmine, once a Carmelite convent, and more anciently, a small Basilian coenoby, opens a view of the rural 'Greek' settlements of Vallongella and Ratto.
Casal Soprano is located within the fortified palace structure of the Mazza Elleni, while further in the distance one can see the ancient village of Sorrentini with the chapel of the Immacolata, formerly of S. Michele Arcangelo in the cave overlooking it.
On the Chiaromana road, you can catch a glimpse of the ancient stone palmento (millstone) for processing grapes, while from the Acqua dei Santi (Water of the Saints), small vegetable gardens unfold on the banks of the Camarano river, which, at the Pantana, open up a view of the two water mills for grinding wheat.
From the village, it is possible to reach, via the 'gentle flowers' paths, the peak of the mountain (1131 m), with its ancient sanctuary: 'Petilia', in legend; 'Cilento', in antiquity; 'Lucania', in the Longobard era; today, of the 'Stella'.
The mountain (at 1131 m. above sea level) with its orographic structure placed like the 'chest', 'arms' and 'hands' of a great 'mother', opens in the manner of an enveloping, welcoming and protective gesture towards the town with its 'head' and 'eyes' ... in the Marian shrine.
